Description: There is nothing more important than protecting your child. As a parent, learning how to install and to use your child safety seat in your vehicle, may be the most important thing you do. When a child safety seat is used correctly, it reduces the risk of death by up to 71%. However, in Montana, an estimated 98% of children are improperly restrained. Community Medical Center offers free appointments with our Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians. Schedule an appointment now to ensure the safest ride possible for your child. Guidelines for a safe ride The safest thing you can do is to let our certified technicians check your seat for proper function, installation and recalls. Here are some of the main guidelines parents should follow: All children ages 12 and under should ride in the back seat. Infants should ride in rear facing safety seats for as long as possible. The minimum requirement is until they are 12 months old and weigh at least 20 pounds. Children over 40 pounds should be correctly secured in a belt positioning booster seat until the adult lap and shoulder belts fit correctly. Replace any child safety seat that has been involved in a crash. Do not purchase a second-hand safety seat. Never put a rear-facing infant or convertible safety seat in the front seat of a vehicle with an active passenger air bag. The child safety seat should be secured tightly against the vehicle seat. It should not move more than one inch in any direction. A five-point-harness seat is preferable to an overhead-shield seat, especially for a newborn. Schedule a free appointment Even if you follow these guidelines, there are other things vital to your child's safety that can be overlooked. Schedule an appointment now, preferably before your child is born. Let us show you the ins and outs of your vehicle's belt system and how it will work with the child safety seat. You will have time to ask a lot of questions and feel prepared when you are ready to drive home from Community Medical Center.
